| EQUIPMENT: |
1 lined journal or sheaf of lined paper 1 red ink pen optional: a laptop |
|
| DIRECTIONS: |
| 1. Prior to the party, prepare the sheaf of lined paper or the journal by writing the line “It was a dark and stormy night when…” on the first page. | | | 2. Ensure that there are plenty of early twentieth century black-and-white movies in rotation throughout the party. Good movies for this are: Nosferatu, any classic Universal or Hammer horror, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, etc. | | | 3. Explain to your guests that they will all be helping write a horror story. At a particular time, you will read the completed story to the party. Each guest is to write at least two sentences, with their final sentence left unfinished for the next guest to finish and expound upon. Each guest should initial their section. | | | 4. Select the first guest to write and present them with the journal. Ask them to pass it on to another guest when finished and so on. | | | 5. It is best to check throughout the evening that the journal is circulating and has not been left somewhere. | | | 6. When all the guests have had an opportunity to write a section in the story, collect the journal and write the closing lines of the story. | | | 7. At the designated time, read the story to the party. | | | 8. Optional: If you would like to send the story to the guests so everyone has a digital copy and to save yourself the trouble of transcribing the story into digital format, set-up a laptop in a safe removed location like an office, den, or other secluded room. Be sure to have horror movies or music playing in the area to keep the mood appropriate. Guests should still put their initials after their section, but may do so in parentheses. After the party, you may wish to format the initials with italics in a smaller font. Save the document throughout the night, and simply send as an email attachment to all the participants afterwards. Be sure to get everyone’s email addresses! | | |
