STORY:
It had been a long, tortuous night and they had finally found a moments respite on this apartment building roof. Dawn was about to break and Lila could see the sky brightening from pitch black to dark blue on the eastern horizon. There were no walking corpses in sight. She looked down at little Marie sleeping by her side. She was a brave kid. A survivor. She had made it halfway across the city by herself after the zombies had killed her family at the beginning of the outbreak. It had all started only a mile away from her house. Marie was only eleven.
The air shifted slightly and Lila caught a whiff of offal. She frowned and her eyes became alert once more, even though she had been up for more than 48 hours. In the distance, to the east, she saw a large dark mass shifting on the ground, like so many maggots slithering inside a corpse. It was a whole hoard of them headed their way, but fortunately from the opposite direction they needed to go in. Lila nudged Marie to wake her.
“Daddy?” Marie asked sleepily.
“No,” Lila said sadly, suddenly reminded of her husband who died two days ago. He had rushed into a mob of the creatures trying to draw them away from her. He was her brave fool and she missed him desperately. Marie was like the daughter they never had. But now there was no time for sorrow and regrets.
“We need to go Marie. They’re coming our way.”
Marie’s eyes opened wide with terror, just like she had seen them do many times over the eternity of a day she had known her. She picked up her shotgun.
“Don’t forget your gun,” she reminded her young companion. “And remember to never put it down until we’re clear of all this. It’s the only way we’ll survive.”
Marie picked up the rifle that was half her size and nodded resolutely, despite the weariness and sadness in her eyes. Lila checked her gun and remaining ammo and said, “Let’s go,” and they headed down stairs of the fire escape into the realm of those who sought to eat their flesh for breakfast.
