STORY:
As I looked out my door, it was as if a white screen had been laid in front of my eyes. The snow was already coming down pretty hard and the news said it was only going to get worse. It was beautiful how snow made everything so pristine and serene. It was the most beautiful death I could have chosen for myself.
I walked out of the door and got into my car and headed for the mountains, where the blizzard would be the worse. It was also a place that scared me. I had always avoided driving there alone, until this day. In those mountains, the roads were narrow and the turns sharp, the cliffs sheared off drastically and occasionally there were falling rocks and avalanches. I also got an eerie feeling about the place as well. Something in the air at twilight that unsettled me. Perhaps the coming darkness. Things always felt a little off up there. The same things looked different every time you looked at them. The trees and rocks seemed hyper-real and driving into the mountains somehow felt like you were driving away from reality.
I hoped to lose myself up there. To drive off one of the cliffs without even realizing it. I’d be gone from this miserable life of mine. There were very few travelers on the streets and only one or two emergency vehicles. Eventually, there was no one as I turned up the mountain highway. The wind was starting to pick up and it was becoming increasingly harder to see. I drove for a mile or two and then everything became white. I could no longer see the road before me and it was at this point that my eyes began to tear up. I closed my eyes for a second, trying to clear away the tears. I wasn’t quite ready to release control of the wheel just yet.
When I opened them, there was a person standing ahead of me in the road, the snow somehow swirling around her as if clearing a path in which to view her. I swerved at the last second, nearly missing the girl and crashed into a snow bank. I was pretty far up into the mountains now and there was little chance that any would be coming my way for a long time.
“Looks like I’m going to freeze to death,” I sighed. A slower death than I had imagined, but maybe deserved for choosing such a course of action. I got out of the car then to see if the girl I had almost hit was ok. What was she doing walking on this road all by herself in the middle of a blizzard?
I stepped out into the ankle deep snow, pulling my down coat further around me. As I turned around to face the way I had come, the girl was standing right in front of me, causing me to jump. Despite her dark brown skin, she looked pale and her lips were bluish purple. She was wearing a black baseball cap and only had on jeans and a grey t-shirt. She wasn’t shivering, but I felt cold just looking at her. The temperature had dropped at least fifteen degrees since I had left my house. The girl looked unscathed by the car and I was more immediately concerned about the cold.
“Oh my god girl! You’re gonna freeze standing out here. Hurry up and get into my car. I’ve got a couple blankets in there.”
I grabbed the girl’s arm and she came with no protest. I opened the door to the backseat and dragged her in with me, reaching over her to close the door. I then had to reach into the front seat to turn on the engine and the heat. I picked the blankets up off the floor and wrapped them around the girl.
“So what’s your name?” I asked. “And more importantly, what are you doing way out here all alone?”
The girl didn’t respond. She looked to be about ten or eleven years old.
“Are you a run away? Did your parents kick you out? Or maybe you have hypothermia and can’t talk.” This alarmed me, so I turned up the heat.
The girl just stared at me with big hazel eyes.
“Please say something so that I know you’re alright. If you’re running away, I’m running away too. I’m running away from my life. Did you come up here to find as much solitude as me?”
At that question, I began to sob. After a few moments I felt small, bone chilling arms hold me in a hug. I wanted to move away because of her freezing skin, but didn’t because I had not had any real physical contact with a person in months. I just kept sobbing into the girl’s shoulder until she suddenly started speaking. I quieted my sobs as best I could in order to listen to the tiny voice that came out of her mouth. As I stilled myself, I realized that I could not feel any of the vibrations one feels when they hug a person. No chest rising and falling with each breath. No vibration from her voice box. No heartbeat. Still, I didn’t move away. It had been so long since anyone had truly talked to me. All I wanted to do was be held and listen.
The girl said, “A long time ago, my parents left me home alone for the first time to run some quick errands. When I opened the door to look at the rain, my dog, who I loved very much, ran off into the woods. So I left my house and wandered into the woods to find him…”

Aaagghh! More! Where's the rest? What must I do to find the ending? Was she struck by lightning? Her heart eaten by rain-soaked soul-wolves? What?!!
