As a fan of the classic Universal monster films I found this film to be a great homage to those films while at the same time offering enough excitement for more contemporary movie fans. The film wastes no time getting into the action. To give you a sense of the time period of the film, it is set during the same time in England as the Jack the Ripper murders which seems just perfect for creating the mood for the piece. The story does not follow the exact storyline of the original Lon Chaney Jr film and honestly I appreciated that. I like that it brought the classic character back but did so in a story structure with more mystery and danger. I think we all have had to suffer through remakes that simply try to recreate the original instead of making the new version its own.
The directing style was stunning at times even beautiful. The style at times reminded of the directing style of the film "Pan's Labyrinth." I appreciated also that the wolfman was truly a wolfman and not simply a giant dog as we suffered through in "New Moon." There was a perfect blend of traditional make up and computer generated effects to bring the monsters to life. Too often I am torn out of the illusion of many films by poorly computer animated monsters and did not feel that in this film considering the wolfman was "real." There were only some running moments that could have used some more attention to detail
Be warned the film is incredibly violent but I imagine most visitors to this website won't be bothered by that! I would highly recommend this film. It was some good old fashion wolfman horror fun! |
